Preserving Salmon Habitat in Salem's Urban Streams

Project type

Land Use

Date

March 14, 2025

Location

Salem, OR

Salem's streams and their adjacent riparian zones, wetlands, and floodplains are a unique and irreplaceable community assets. They provide important ecosystems services for residents and habitat for 19 species listed by the federal and state government, including Chinook salmon. The State of Oregon owns over one linear mile of salmon-bearing stream frontage in Salem. A significant portion of this land is undeveloped. This gives the State of Oregon an opportunity to take low-cost action to support urban habitat conservation before it is too late.
